ABOUT THE ARTIST
Marjorie H. Francis Zaman
Marnie, as she liked to be known, was born in Newburgh, New
York, on May 14th, 1924. She was brought up by a predominate family
at the time.
She was married to Stan Francis, a Major in the Army Air Corps in
1942, during World War II. Their first born was a daughter in January
of 1944 and they had two more subsequent children.
They settled down in her beloved Hudson Valley, just north of New
York City.
Marnie had a passion for music and played the piano and later the
organ on a daily basis. She was fully engaged in needlework, crewel
work and occupied every hour of her TV time. She always had to have
something for her hands to do. She produced many works during her life
time, including full size rugs, tapestries and pillows; mostly in the style
of Sovonnerie, a style of the 17th century French. Later in life, Marnie
discovered painting. Her mother enjoyed painting, and created several
nice pieces, But, Marnie was prolific in her production of art work.
She did replicas of famous art from the Hudson Valley School of Art
as well as others. She adored her hometown and painted many pictures
of her surrounding landscape. Ships were another passion of hers.
The family had a tradition of sailing from the whaling days of the
1830's right up to today. Her passion is evident in her blue hues -
sky and water depictions. She has meticulously labeled her paintings
to credit the original artists.
Marnie currently resides in Charlotte, North Carolina, and has lived
here for the past twenty five years.
We just received several of Marnie's paintings and needlepoint rugs
from part of her estate.
Shown next is a sample of some of those items.
